Since 1984, Mike Grodhaus has represented corporate and governmental clients in litigation in Ohio and other states. In 2003, former Ohio Attorney General Jim Petro appointed Mr. Grodhaus as his First Assistant Attorney General. In that position, he was the principal deputy to the Attorney General and with the senior staff, supervised the office's 350 lawyers as they worked on approximately 30,000 different cases. He was also directly responsible for the representation of the Governor, all of Ohio's constitutional officers, the General Assembly, and most of the State's agencies, boards and commissions in civil litigation.
Prior to his appointment as First Assistant Attorney General, Mr. Grodhaus spent eight years as the Chief Legal Counsel to the Ohio Auditor of State. In that position, he provided legal advice to the Auditor and to numerous agencies of state and local governments regarding the proper expenditure of tax dollars and well as counseling them on public records and open government issues. In addition, as both First Assistant Attorney General and the Chief Legal Counsel to the Auditor, he was responsible for the legislative agendas of each agency and directed the efforts of each office's legislative staff, including personally lobbying members of the Ohio General Assembly.
Prior to his service in state government, Mr. Grodhaus was a trial attorney in Cleveland with the international law firm of Squire, Sanders & Dempsey. He specialized in defending corporate clients in asbestos, formaldehyde, and other chemical exposure cases, as well as trying automobile product liability and commercial litigation cases.
Mr. Grodhaus is admitted to the Bars of Ohio; U.S. District Court, Northern District of Ohio, Southern District of Ohio; U.S. Court of Appeals, Sixth Circuit; United States Supreme Court. He is a member of the American Bar Association, Ohio State Bar Association, and the Columbus Bar Association.
